ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOX) – A man is dead and his friend injured after a single-car crash in St. Clair County Sunday.
According to the report a 22-year-old driver lost control of his car around 7:20 p.m. in the 2300 block of IMBS Station Road in unincorporated Belleville.
Police say driver Steven Shamrock was conscious and talking to first responders. He told them he tried to gain control of his 1999 Oldsmobile after it hydroplaned, but couldn’t.
Shamrock’s car slipped off the roadway, struck a culvert and flipped over. He was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of his injuries.
Shamrock’s passenger, 24-year-old David Douthitt was trapped during the accident.
Authorities say Douthitt who was unresponsive had to be extricated by the Columbia Fire Department personnel. He was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Dean Darnall about an hour and a half later.
St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the cause of the accident.
