HIGHLAND, Ill. (KMOX) — “Hope for Heroes” is asking for volunteers to put out 2,200 flags on Easter Sunday for the Highland Marine killed in a training accident in Nevada.

Corporal Aaron Ripperda was among the 7 service members killed in a live-fire training exercise.

The group wants to line the 3 mile drive to the funeral home with American Flags as a tribute.

Organizer Chip Shaffer is asking those who want to help to meet at the Highland VFW hall at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Usually, the group sends fun kits to troops overseas like kites, baseballs, and things to pass the time.

“This is probably one of the hardest parts of the job, going out and knowing that we lost one, it hurts” said Shaffer. “To honor them and their family we try and put our best face on.”
