State of Illinois Announces E-Recycling Grants
CHICAGO (AP/KMOX) – Madison, St. Clair and 47 other counties in Illinois will get $2,000 each in grant money from the state to promote public awareness of electronics recycling programs.
Gov. Pat Quinn announced the awards Saturday and said it was his way of celebrating Earth Month.
Quinn says the funding for radio and newspaper ads is part of an effort to “ensure everyone knows how they can safely get rid of the electronics they no longer use.”
Illinois law prohibits the disposal of items like TVs, VCRs, computers and video game consoles in landfills. Many of their components contain hazardous materials like heavy metals, mercury or lead that can seep into the land and contaminate nearby areas.
The total $100,000 in grant money comes from fees paid by electronics manufacturers who sell products in Illinois.
