Man Beats Friend With Hammer After Fight Over Cigarette Lighter

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — A dispute over a cigarette lighter is blamed for a brutal attack in St. Louis that left one man hospitalized and another in jail, accused of the crime.

Police say the two men began fighting Wednesday evening after one man believed the other stole his lighter.

According to witnesses the 54-year-old suspect then retrieved a hammer and began beating the 55-year-old victim over the head. Neighbors and police found the man with a severe head injury in the middle of the street.

Officers found the suspect several blocks away and took him into custody. Formal charges have not been filed.

The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.

Reports say the two men were celebrating the death of another friend when the argument broke out at a home in the 4900 block of Arlington.
