ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–Just weeks after winning his historic fourth term, Mayor Francis Slay was back in campaign mode over the weekend — raising money for a possible fifth term.
Slay hosted a victory celebration party and fundraiser at Forest Park, where donors gave money for the March 2017 primary.
UMSL Political Science Professor Dave Robertson says for career politicians, early fundraising helps scare off possible challengers.
“This is pretty common for people in politics who have been working on building a career,” Robertson said, “The earlier and the bigger the war chest, the more discouraging it is for anybody to run against you who is in his right mind.”
No totals yet on how much Slay raised over the weekend. In the just-completed mayoral primary, Slay raised about $3 million to challenger Lewis Reed’s $1 million.
