St. Louis Zoo Announces Name for Baby Elephant

ST. LOUIS (AP) — More than 50,000 votes have come in for the contest to name the new baby girl elephant at the St. Louis and the winning name is: Priya.

The zoo announced the new name, pronounced “Pree-yah,” on Monday.

The Asian elephant was born April 26 to Ellie, the 42-year-old mother. Voting began April 29 and concluded Sunday. Priya was chosen from among five options. People voted on social media sites, via postcard and at the zoo welcome desk.
