ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) - There was a serious injury, a minor injury and an arrest at an early morning house fire in Alton Wednesday.

Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says the serious injury was to the man who firefighters found in the home in the 3800 block of Western near where a couch caught fire.

“They found a 59 year old male in the basement in a semi-conscious state. He was assisted from the house,” Sebold said.

That man was being treated Wednesday morning for second-degree burns to his upper torso.

The minor injury was suffered by a firefighter who was knocked down by one of the eleven residents of the home who tried to get back inside to save the victim. That 20 year old man was arrested for ignoring orders to stay back.

Fire officials says careless smoking started the fire.
