Although its total weekend gross of $70.6 million was enough to put it in first place, “Star Trek Into Darkness” did less than projected (off at least $10 million) and failed to match the $75.2 opening of the previous film in 2009, “Star Trek.” The movie did not hold up against its competition as well as expected.
“Iron Man 3” scored a hefty $35.2 million over the weekend to put it in second place. After only three weeks in release, “Iron Man 3” has taken in a total of $337.1 million domestically. When coupled with its take of over $600 million in foreign markets, “Iron Man 3” is already close to being a $1 billion dollar hit.
The remake of “The Great Gatsby” did a respectable $23.5 million in its second weekend to put it in third place. For two weeks, “Gatsby” has scored $90.2 million. Number four from the weekend was “Pain and Gain” with $3.1 million. In fifth place was “The Croods” with $2.6 million.
