Hundreds of Bridgeton residents are waking up in hotels this morning.
Their homes are near the smelly Bridgeton landfill where an underground fire can’t be contained.
The odor will be even worse this week while workers dig into the mound to pull out the underground concrete pipes that carry the smell to the surface.
Republic, the firm that operates the landfill, is paying for the cleanup and picking up the residents’ hotel tabs.
The work is due to be done by the middle of next month.
Meantime, state inspectors will be monitoring the odor coming off the landfill. . .and the fire that continues to burn deep inside the structure.
