VANDALIA, Ill. (KMOX) – Five passengers have been killed and six others injured in a roll over crash on I-70 just west of Vandalia, Illinois.
It happened around 10 a.m. Monday.
A deputy with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KMOX that five passengers died when the van rolled over multiple times. Illinois State Police Sgt. Mark Zimmerman said many of the victims were ejected from the 15-passenger van.
A Fayette County Hospital spokeswoman tells KMOX News, four survivors were brought to them in stable condition. Two of those patients were transferred to a Springfield hospital and another to a St. Louis-area hospital. Two other survivors were taken to Greenville Regional Hospital, where their medical statuses weren’t immediately available.
Deputy Shawn Carter says there were 11 passengers in the van when the crash occurred. All the victims are adults. He says the van was returning from what he called, “a religious event” in California.
The name of the church is unknown at this time but Deputy Carter says the white 2002 Dodge van, which had no decals or displayed markings, has Maryland license plates.
Illinois State Police shutdown eastbound I-70 near the scene. It has since been reopened.
Vandalia is located about 70 miles east of St. Louis.
