ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An off-duty St. Louis firefighter assisted in a water rescue yesterday after a man lost control of his pickup truck along Courtois Street in south St. Louis and ended up in the River des Peres.

Chris Dimza, a 4-year veteran of the department, just happened to be driving by when he spotted the vehicle. Dimza stopped, jumped in the water and helped the man get to dry land.

The driver was unconscious when he was rescued but is expected to survive. He transported to an area hospital.

Captain Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department says Dimza knew what he was doing.

“He’s received his sift-water rescue trainning, so he was more than capable and willing,” Shutter said of the rescue. “He did what he needed to do and got the job done. [He] did a good job.”

Rescue crews had a difficult time getting the pickup out of the water because it had rolled over on its side while underwater.
