Light-hearted, well made animation with superior vocal casting and family friendly storylines and messages are almost a sure thing at the movie box office these day. Over the weekend, newcomer “Monsters University,” a sequel to “Monsters Inc.” from 2001, opened and finished comfortably out front of the field grossing $82 million on slightly over 4000 screens.
The new Brad Pitt movie, “World War Z,” which is about a zombie pandemic, came in a respectable second with $66 million. It is questionable if “World War Z” will hold up at the box office in the next few weeks because of better competition.
The ever popular Superman series continues to impress and entertain large audiences. “Man of Steel” finished in third place over the weekend taking in $41.2 million, which gives it a grand total of $210 million for just two weeks in release in North America. “Man of Steel” should be one of the top five box office movies of 2013.
The camp buddies film about well-known young actors experiencing the end of the world in Hollywood, “This Is The End,” was fourth over the weekend with $13 million. In fifth place was “Now You See Me” with $7.9 million. For additional information on all the box office numbers from the weekend, click on the link below.
Opening next weekend of “The Heat Is On” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, plus the action film “White House Down.” This is (at least) the second time in 2013 that movies have depicted the White House being destroyed. Is there a message here?
