COLUMBIA, Ill. (AP) Murder charges have been filed against a southwestern Illinois man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend on the same day both were expected in court regarding her protection order against him.

Monroe County prosecutors charged 20-year-old Jordan Kuykendall with first-degree murder on Saturday. He’s accused of killing 17-year-old Erin Schneider, whose body was found Thursday in Kuykendall’s home in Columbia, just southeast of St. Louis.

Kuykendall is being held on a $1 million bond. Police say he isn’t cooperating and has requested an attorney.

Officers found Schneider’s body after fielding a request by her parents to check Kuykendall’s residence after she went missing that morning.

Kuykendall is under police guard at a St. Louis hospital where he’s being treated for injuries he sustained in a car accident Thursday morning.
