Although most MLB news will be All-Star related in the next few days, the St. Louis Cardinals have decided to make a roster move. The team announced via its Twitter account that it has optioned right-hander Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis. Because no other players were promoted, the Cardinals will have an additional roster spot to fill before season play resumes on Friday.
Butler, 24, had been in the Cardinals’ bullpen since May 31. In 12 appearances, he allowed three runs on five hits in 12 2/3 innings. Butler, however, pitched only twice since June 25.
Since Joe Kelly is expected to return to the bullpen after the All-Star break, the Cardinals can either replace Butler with another pitcher or an extra position player.
