New Bridge Faces Slight Delay

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The installation of the linking piece on the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge has been delayed.

In order to install the final floor beam linking the Illinois and Missouri sides of the span, crews first had to install edge grinders on each side. Crews hoped to have both finished yesterday but were able to only finish one.

“[There’s] about 2,600 bolts to go in and these are large diameter bolts,” says Randy Hitt, Missouri Department of Transportation Project Director. “So, it takes a long time to do that and get everything coordinated.”

Crews will finish bolting down the second edge grinder sometime Friday morning, allowing them to finish installing the final floor beam.

“We will setting the last piece of steel off the barge on the river, up into position,” Hitt says. “We’re going to hold it, suspend it up above the gap and have a photo opportunity for the workers, who have been working many hours on this project.”

The beam was expected to be in place by 9 a.m., but it’s now expected to happen at noon.

Hitt says concrete panels will be installed Saturday, completing the roadway between Missouri and Illinois.
