FULTON, Mo. (KMOX) – The Callaway nuclear plant in central Missouri is shut down, due to a small fire in a turbine building.
Plant owner Ameren-Missouri says it declared an “unusual event” Friday night, as per Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines.
Company officials say the fire was put out quickly, and at no time was there any threat to the public or the environment. No injuries were reported.
The Callaway plant near Fulton generates about 20% of the electricity supplied to Ameren-Missouri’s 1.2 million customers. While out of service for inspection, the company’s other energy centers will make up the difference.
