ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The Riverview Gardens school board voted Tuesday night to hire First Student bus company to move students to Mehlville and Kirkwood, beginning later this week.
Under Missouri law, the district has to pay transportation costs for those students wishing to go to a different district now that Riverview is unaccredited.
District Chief Financial Officer Ennis Moss says transportation will cost about $601,000 per year. He says it was a decision the district had to make quickly.
“It was not a formal sealed bid because we didn’t have the time,” he explains. “But we did go through our due diligence and we reached out and solicited bids from those six companies.”
Moss says Mehlville kept accepting more students to more schools every day this week, making the negotiations more challenging.
The $601,000 contract breaks down to about $245 dollars per bus, per day, with 1,400 students going to Kirkwood and Mehlville. The district has an option to review the contract next March.
