MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - Prospects of a federal government shutdown could affect thousands of workers at military installations around Illinois.

Scott Air Force Base spokeswoman Karen Petitt says the threatened partial shutdown may mean two-thirds of the base’s 5,000 civilian workers could be furloughed. They wouldn’t receive pay as long as the shutdown persists.

The remaining one-third of the civilian employees on the 13,000-worker base would be exempt. The air base about 25 miles east of St. Louis serves as a global mobility and transportation hub for the Defense Department.

At Great Lakes Naval Training Station north of Chicago, about 2,500 of the roughly 18,000 total employees would be furloughed.

In northwestern Illinois, the Rock Island Arsenal is gearing up for the possibility of furloughing roughly 3,000 of 8,000 employees start Tuesday.
