Charges Dropped in Madison County Murder Case

Greg Branson

BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOX) – He was set to stand trial Monday for murder. Now he’s a free man.

The Belleville News Democrat reports a first-degree murder charge against 29-year-old Rodney Lewis of East St. Louis has been dropped.

Lewis was accused of stabbing 18-year-old Michael Barton to death in September of last year. But St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly asked the charge be dismissed after new evidence raised a reasonable doubt as to Lewis’s guilt.

Kelly says “We aggressively prosecute violent crime but in doing so we will not violate our oaths to seek justice and not merely convict.”
