Former Madison County Treasurer Sentenced in Tax Lien Scheme

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – Former Madison County Treasurer Fred Bathon is headed to prison for his part in a tax lien-rigging scheme that cheated taxpayers out of millions of dollars.

A judge Friday sentenced the 58-year-old Bathon to 30 months in federal prison.

The former treasurer must also pay $20,000 in fines.

Bathon pleaded guilty earlier this year to rigging tax lien auctions between 2005 and 2008, allowing political donors to profit from the inflated penalties property owners were forced to pay.

Three other men have pleaded guilty to conspiring with Bathon.
