I love Bill Nye. I do. He’s a great guy and I think he’s always done a fantastic job promoting the sciences to kids and adults alike. But I really, really wish he wouldn’t do this for a couple of reasons. First and most important, it gives the impression that there is a legitimate debate here. There isn’t. There’s a group of people who simply refuse to believe what they see in front of them because of their religious beliefs. Nobody legitimately in pursuit of knowledge can possibly approach from that standpoint, and nobody in the scientific community seriously believes that the evidence supporting evolution is in any way lacking. It’s a canard.

And second, there’s just nothing to be gained. Anyone in the aforementioned group has already chosen to bend their perception of reality beyond the point of ridiculousness to accommodate their faith. Given that, there’s simply no way you’re going to sway them, ever. To use the old bumper sticker cliche, “God said it, they believe it, that settles it.”

So Bill, please let these folks alone to wallow in their own ignorance and pseudoscience. The more you’re seen on the same stage with them, the more some folks will consider the two of you equals. Please always remember that you’re not.

Here is the story that I am speaking with regard to. Link
