Missouri and Illinois Snow Removal Budgets Dwindling

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The snow and ice that have been dumped on us so far this winter is now being measured in dollars both in Illinois and Missouri.

Becky Allmeroth, with the Missouri Department of Transportation, said the St. Louis region is very very close to reaching and most likely surpassing what MoDot spent last year for snow removal.

That would be about $4.2 million for the metropolitan area, according to Allmeroth. Adding, “We still have quite a bit of winter left.”

The story is similar in Illinois. Illinois Department of Transportation district engineer Joseph Monroe said, “We’re running approximately 75-80% ahead of where we would be on a normal year.”

But he adds they do have plenty of salt on hand, and if it come to it he said the department can always petition state reserves for more funds.

“As for the budget we are on the high end definitely but we’re not in a position where we need to make any drastic cuts,” he said.
