COLUMBIA, MO (KMOX) – Former NFL player Wade Davis came out in 2012, now he’s director of the You Can Play Project and he says the most important thing to Michael Sam is that he can play.

“Michael knows he was an amazing player, you don’t become the SEC player for defense without being able to ball,” he says.

Davis says he hung out with Sam on Saturday night.

“Michael understood the gravity of what he was about to do, but he wasn’t going to let it overwhelm him because he’s built for this.”

Sam came out to his teammates last August.

Head football coach Gary Pinkel says, “He’s taught a lot of people here first-hand that it doesn’t matter what your background is, or your personal orientation, we’re all on the same team and we all support each other.”
