SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN/Capitol Bureau) – There may be fewer deer hunting permits available in your area this year.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is adjusting population goals for deer in 41 counties around the state, which may mean deer hunters who use firearms won’t be able to hunt.

“And in those counties, hunters have done a good job of helping reduce the herd, so we can stabilize the herd and in some cases, that might mean fewer deer permits available for the firearms season in those specific counties,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman Tim Schweizer.

The change only applies to hunters who use firearms, not bow hunters.

The state had reached its objective of a 14% reduction in the statewide deer herd in 2012, though in some areas, the population remained above that goal. Schweizer says biologists with the INDR have determined that deer herds can be allowed to grow in these particular counties, while still keeping the statewide population at its current level.
