METRO EAST (KMOX) – Five overdose deaths in the Metro East in recent days have health officials perplexed and very concerned.
It will take about a month to determine whether the deadly drugs came from the same batch or have some other connection.
Two overdose deaths in Belleville, which police have not yet identified the drug used, happened shortly after three heroin deaths that occurred within hours of each other in Madison County. The age of the deceased ranges from 29 to 40 years old.
Coroner Steve Nonn says they’ve recovered heroin that’s up to 80% pure, while some are mixing it with other drugs to get a stronger high.
“Such as xanax or fentanyl or that kind of thing so you’re creating a deadly cocktail,” says Nonn.
Nonn adds that when it comes to the quality and strength of heroin available on the streets, users are truly rolling the dice with their lives on the line.
“There’s no Angie’s List that you can contact and see if your local drug dealer’s dealed any drugs that’s killed anybody,” says Nonn.
