COLUMBIA, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — PGA golfer Steve Elkington joked that openly gay NFL prospect Michael Sam was throwing women’s handbags at the NFL combine.

Elkington, who captured the 1995 PGA Championship and has 10 career PGA wins, made the comment on Twitter Tuesday.

ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine,” Elkington tweeted. “No one else expected to throw today.”

Elkington also said ESPN’s coverage of Sam was “embarrassing.”

“ESPN covering Michael Sam as a gay athlete is embarrassing,” the golfer said.

Elkington tried to clarify his comments that he was rooting for Sam.

“I’m for Sam,” he said, “I’m against ESPN telling me he’s gay.”
