ST. LOUIS - It’s been a miserable winter and an expensive one for the St. Louis Streets Department. Streets Director Todd Waltermann says with this latest snowstorm cleanup, his department has spent twice what it usually does for a typical winter.

Waltermann says they’ve spent $2.1 million on this winter, compared with about $1 million for a normal winter.

“It’s very significant,” Waltermann says. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years and that’s definitely a record for me.”

The salt warehouse that was once full is almost empty. Waltermann says they have about 10,000 tons of salt on hand—enough to handle three more snow storms. After that, the salt warehouse will be empty and need refilling.
