Monarch F.D. Board Makes Controversial Hire
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOX) – One of four officers fired over two years ago after being accused of discriminating against four female firefighter/paramedics, has been rehired as a deputy chief at the Monarch Fire Protection District.
Cary Spiegel refused to resign after an appellate court upheld a discrimination award against the district. He and two others sued, claiming they were actually fired for clashing with the firefighters union. They lost the suit.
In rehiring Spiegel, the board’s majority said that they’ve determined the accusations against him were unfounded….and he’s the most qualified for the position.
The firefighters who sued Monarch still work in the district.
