On the wings of the success of the animated film “Rio” in 2011 comes “Rio 2″ with a similar story line and many of the same vocal castings. It was enough to take in a whooping $39 million over the weekend, giving “Rio 2″ a firm hold on 2nd place at the box office behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

“Captain” nosed it out with a take of $41,4 million. For two weeks, “Captain” has sold over  $159 million.

oculus Score One for the Blu Bird

A supernatural thriller about a murder, originally scheduled to be released in 2013, finally arrived this weekend. It’s called “Oculus” and sold $12 million which put it in 3rd place.

Kevin Costner’s new movie, in which he plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns, came in a disappointing 4th with $9.8 million. “Divergent” came in 5th with $7.5 million, barley nosing out “Noah” which took in $7.45 million. A big picture opening next weekend is “Transcendence” starring Johnny Depp.
