ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – It’s high school hockey playoff time in St. Louis, and once again Christian Brothers College High School and head coach John Jost have a target on their backs.
“We are used to it,” Jost says. “And the players, they sense that and hopefully use that as a good tool to motivate themselves to play as well as they can.”
Senior Captains Trevor Wilhelm and Andy Willis are looking to three-peat as Challenge Cup Champions.
“There is a lot of honor,” Willis says. “But that makes for some pretty high expectations for us, But we just try to go on and play our game.”
CBC’s game is a good one.
“I think its just he previous history,” Wilhelm says. “And no one wants to ruin what has come before us so it gives you that extra push.”
The Cadets are 89-3-1 in its last three seasons, including the previous two Mid-States Club Hockey Association’s version of a State Championship, called the Challenge Cup. In total CBC has 14 Challenge Cups thanks to alumni now playing in the NHL like Arizona Coyotes’ Centerman, Joe Vitale.
“When you have a guy like Joe Vitali texting me before the game, ‘Hey tell the guys this is the funniest hockey they are going to play in their whole lives.’ It means a lot to them.” Jost says.
It also means seniors like Willis and Wilhelm are on track with the guys who are in or headed to the NHL.
“Hockey in St. Louis has definitely grown over the year,” Willis says. “With how many kids are going to be in the draft it’s a growing thing and just incredible for St. Louis hockey.”
The next step for Willis is Springfield, Missouri to play for the Missouri State Bears’ club team.
But Wilhelm next year is playing junior hockey, which means moving away from home and hopefully move up the ranks.
“I just want to keep playing hockey for as long as I can and see where it takes me,” Wilhelm says.
In the 2016 Challenge Cup Playoffs the Cadets have earned the No. 1 seed and will play Westminster Christian Academy on Fed. 11.
