ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Officials with Gateway Motorsports Park and IndyCar announced Thursday that a race date has been awarded to St. Louis for the cars, and stars, of the Indianapolis 500.

They also unveiled a multi-year agreement to produce annual IndyCar-sanctioned events at the 1.25-mile oval at Gateway.

“We want to be in cities like St. Louis where the event has the potential to really captivate the city,” announced Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The race is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, August 26, 2017, with practice and qualifying on Friday, August 25.

Tickets will go on sale October 11, 2016, and plans are already in the works to incorporate a weeklong celebration under the banner ‘Festival of Speed’ leading up to the race itself.

“Today is a monumental day for the people of the St. Louis region,” said Curtis Francois, owner of Gateway Motorsports Park. “More than a dozen track operators around the country sought an IndyCar date for their communities. I firmly believe we came out on top because of the energy, loyalty and commitment to great sports that fans of all kinds demonstrate each day in this community.”

With Thursday’s announcement at the Four Seasons hotel in downtown St. Louis, Gateway becomes one of only two facilities in the US to host events in American racing’s three major bodies — IndyCar, NASCAR and NHRA — in 2017.

On hand for the news conference was IndyCar driver and team owner Ed Carpenter, who conducted extensive testing at Gateway during the selection process.

“I’m really happy that it’s been able to be added to the 2017 schedule,” Carpenter says, adding that he ‘didn’t want to get off the track’ during his test run. “You could just really feel the excitement and passion to bring an IndyCar race back to Gateway Motorsports Park in St. Louis. I know we all can’t wait to get back here.”
