Missouri Makes Top 10 for Most Obese States

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Missouri makes the top 10 for most obese states for adults, while Illinois is in the top 10 for childhood obesity.

The 13th annual State of Obesity report is just out, ranking Missouri at No. 10 for its adult obesity rate. Illinois is at No. 18.

“Missouri hit the top 10 at 32.4 percent,” says Laura Siegel, with Trust for America’s Health, “and Illinois is a little bit further behind but still 30 percent of adults who are obese.”

The childhood obesity rate in Illinois is 19.3 percent among 10 to 17-year-olds — that’s ninth highest in the nation. In Missouri, it’s 13.5 percent, and that ranks 36th, nationally.

The diabetes rate is higher in Missouri than Illinois — 11.5 percent compared to 9.9 percent. The hypertension rate in Missouri is also higher — 34 percent compared to 30 percent in Illinois.
