We all think we know the story of U. S. Air Captain Sully Sullenberger and flight 1549 that ended up making an emergency landing in the Hudson River moments after taking off from LaGuardia Airport.

155 passengers and crew survived the miraculous emergency landing after the aircraft struck a flock of birds that disabled both engines. But in the film on the event starring Tom Hanks as Sullenberger and directed by Clint Eastwood, you’ll learn a lot more, much of it fascinating and information the media never reported.

Most important was how the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) tried to blame Sullenberger for landing in the water when they felt one of his engines could have enabled him to land at one of two nearby airports, or that he could have glided powerless to an airport even without engines operating. Sullenberger, who was U. S. Air’s chief safety check pilot at the time of the event, proved them wrong even to the point of getting a begrudging apology from the investigators.

Aaron Eckhart is excellent playing Sully’s first officer, as is Laura Linney as Sully’s wife Lorraine. This movie is captivating storytelling about a miraculous event, the likes of which had never happened before and likely will never happen again. Hanks is perfect, as usual.

So fasten your seat belts securely and make sure your seatbacks are in the upright position. And enjoy the adventure with “Sully.”
