Sheriff Nominee Warns Deputies Unprepared for Courthouse Shootings

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A nominee for Sheriff in the city of St. Louis is warning that deputies are unprepared to handle a court house shooting.

Democrat Vernon Betts says sheriff’s deputies are poorly trained, and one deputy doesn’t even carry a gun.

“if there was a shooter that came in, more than likely everybody would hit the floor or start running,” Betts says. “Instead of come up with some kind of system or plan to protect the public.”

Retiring Sheriff Jim Murphy says all of his deputies have undergone “active shooter” training at the police academy. Murphy says the one deputy without a gun is not on the front lines, but inside a court room with another deputy who is armed.
