HOUSE SPRINGS, Mo. (AP) – (UPDATED 10:21 a.m.) A search has resumed for a 14-year-old who went missing in the Big River south of St. Louis, but authorities fear he drowned.
The boy was swimming Wednesday afternoon at Rockford Beach Park in Jefferson County. Witnesses saw him in the water, but at some point, he did not resurface. The boy’s name and where he is from have not been released.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says authorities believe the boy drowned. The search has turned from rescue to recovery of the body.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) – (Updated 9:25 p.m.) Hope’s fading fast for a positive outcome in the search for a missing swimmer in Jefferson County.
The 14-year-old boy went under Wednesday afternoon while swimming in a river channel at Rockford Beach Park in House Springs.
Cpl. Justin Wheatley with the Missouri State Highway Patrol was asked about the chances of finding the swimmer alive. He says the search was called off due to darkness and will resume first thing in the morning.
“There is a chance that maybe he got swept down, he’s stranded somewhere … we always hope for that,” Wheatley says. “We are treating this as a recovery at this time and assuming that they have drowned.”
