ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The area’s colleges, universities and even companies are coming together today to announce a new effort to get degrees in the hands of more St. Louisans, called the St. Louis Regional Education Commitment.

The goal is see St. Louis become a Top 10 region for educational attainment by 2025.

It’s spearheaded by the St. Louis regional chamber, but includes St. Louis University, Southwestern Illinois College, Maritz, UMB Bank and other organizations.

It’s critical the future economic base for this to happen. two thirds of all jobs that will coming into the market in this next decade require those degrees,” says regional chamber president Joe Reagan.

Take a look at amazon as an example. Their requests for their second headquarters city include a big focus on an educated workforce.

Reagan says part of the commitment will be a program called ‘Gateway to Degrees’, which will help St. Louisans get, or in a lot of cases finish, their college degrees.
