With society shifting to a healthier way of living, the vegetarian diet is becoming more and more appealing. Thankfully, St. Louis has plenty of vegetarian restaurants with delicious options to please vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant was founded in 2007 and has been delighting locals with its creative approach to Ethiopian food ever since. Ethiopian cuisine heavily utilizes “injeera,” which is a sourdough flatbread. Using this edible utensil, one can scoop up mounds of delicious lentils, spicy vegetables and peas for consumption. Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant is an excellent option for vegetarians who are looking for something a little different.

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Terrene, an adjective meaning “of the earth,” is located in downtown St. Louis. This environmentally-friendly restaurant certainly lives up to its name, offering customers a wide variety of vegetarian fare that is both delicious and sustainable. The menu features a wide selection of items for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Of note are the Tempeh Cakes; this vegetarian specialty starts with vegetable tempeh cakes and is accompanied by black beans, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, corn and red pepper aioli.

With creative dish names like the Sal-Amanda and the Van Dyke, the Shangri La Diner is clearly one that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Their popular all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet brunch is chock-full of delicious vegetarian items that would make any foodie cry tears of joy. Try The Fat Mattress: This aptly titled dish is Shangri La Diner’s take on the Reuben and is served with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing and vegetarian corned beef.
