Instead of a necktie or coffee mug this year, how about celebrating dad’s special day by spending time with him? St. Louis is brimming with possibilities, from car shows to art events and brunches to blues. No matter what dad’s interests are, you’re sure to find something in the city for the whole family to enjoy.

Dads and grandpas will enjoy free admission to the Kemp Auto Museum on Father’s Day (but only if they’re accompanied by at least one child). Admission includes tours of the special and permanent collections of rare and vintage European automobiles, plus free tours of the gallery that showcases the history of the museum and its exhibits and projects. The kids will enjoy hands-on craft projects, and there will be snacks for everyone. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Regular admission is $9 for adults and $5 for children.

If you think dad would enjoy a real Mississippi River experience, you can reserve a spot on one of the riverboats under the south leg of the Gateway Arch for a four-hour river tour and delicious brunch. The cruise departs at 1 p.m. and returns at 3 p.m. The price of $38 for adults or $18 for children age three to 12 includes the cruise and an extensive buffet featuring carved prime rib, scrambled eggs, French toast and other brunch delicacies. Live Dixieland music adds to the festivities.

If dad loves craft beer, slow-cooked barbecue and the blues, he’ll enjoy this afternoon event at Pere Marquette State Park. The Beer Garden at the Lodge is a lovely place to spend a summer afternoon, and Pere Marquette offers hiking and other outdoor activities for the whole family. This event will offer a selection of micro-brews, domestic and imported beers as well as cocktails and frozen drinks. The event takes place from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 15.

Tour the CAM galleries and enjoy special family activities on Saturday, June 14 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The museum has hands-on craft workshops, led by local artists, musical performances, face painting and storytelling to engage families all afternoon. Maybe you’d like to bypass all of the events and crowds and just hang out with dad for the day. The famous Fitz’s soda company, that brews and bottles delicious root beer, cream soda and other sweet treats, sports a restaurant on Delmar in U City that is a favorite with local dads and visitors alike. Watching the bottling machinery at work behind a giant glass window is fascinating for all ages, and who doesn’t love an old-fashioned menu of burgers, dogs and root beer floats?
